Listening
We will be discussing in class on Monday the topic of listening. What is listening exactly? Is it the same as hearing? How is listening connected to effective communication? Please comment in the blog a moment when you were a poor listener. Give us a summary of the incident. Identify what happened as a result of the poor listening experience? And, what could have turned this incident to a more productive communication experience?

Informative Speech- Self Critique- Did You Ever Notice
Please post your self critique of your informative speech here. I want you to address three improvements and three strengths. Comment with details. Please do not focus solely on delivery criteria. You have put a lot of time into researching, organizing, audience adaptation, visual aids, etc. Much of your speech happened outside of class when you delivered, so examine the speech criteria and provide a detailed self examination of your first speech. Also, please include a course of action on how you will begin to address your needed improvements for the second speech in this critique.

The Power of Positive Criticism
An important part of becoming a strong speaker is using the feedback from your audience to develop a self awareness of yourself and your message. We spoke about the idea of viewing the critiques that you will receive on your speeches as a "gift" from your classmates to becoming a stronger speaker. We need to stay aware of how we share this information with each other. What words or ways will you share with each other suggestions for strengths and improvements? It is important to always remember that the criticism should be positive in form whether it is sharing a strength or necessary improvement. What ways can you share suggestions for ways to improve? Try to think what can I teach another student when I critique them, not just list of speech criteria. Check out this brief article. Dr. Weisinger is a psychologist, author that addresses the area of positive criticism and emotional intelligence as a means to finding both personal and professional success. Share in your comments suggestions for what needs to be addressed in your opinion in speech critiques. How will you share this information? And, have you ever receive a critique that you found useful? Or destructive? What things have you found to be helpful in receiving advice? This blog comment is due on Monday, September 29th at the start of class.

First Blog Post- Conquering Speech Anxiety
We will be using this blog to submit assignments, share thoughts and discuss public speaking. Blog assignments will have due dates. No comments on blogs will be allowed after the due dates. You will earn course points for your comments. (Please see the syllabus.) The blog comments must make application to course and contain depth and thoughtfulness in responses. Any student that leaves a quick response or comments without illustrating application or effort will receive zero points. Let's begin commenting with the blog.
Communication Apprehension seemed to be a major focus in presenting speeches. Two important ingredients to effective speech delivery are reprogramming your "self talk" and putting in proper preparation so you really "know your stuff". Take a look at this clip. Then, post to the blog what your self talk sounds like and a portion of this interview that you identified with in your experience. What does your self talk sound like? What are three practical suggestions that you can give yourself to begin to conquer your speech anxiety?

Well Done! End of Semester Post
I felt that it was important to post a end of semester post. I know that this class was not easy for many of you for several reasons. It was my intention to help you create academic, professional, and technological skills for application to the workplace some day with the teaching of this course material. It took a lot of effort and courage for many of you to meet the challenges of this course. Many of you met those challenges and even rose above the course expectations this semester. I witnessed many of you grow in these areas and felt quite proud of the accomplishments that you acheived in these speech assignments. I hope that you are equally proud of your progress. I believe that life is a journey, not a destination....I hope that you will continue to put these communication skills into practice as you continue on your journey. Have a great summer!

Networking/Elevator Speeches / Impromptu Speaking
We discussed in class the importance of developing career networks. Networks are important for developing identify, developing contacts for information, advice, and moral support as you pursue your goals. Kellly Pederson, a Career Specialist, at Rider University states that 75-80% of jobs are found through networks. And, a referral generates 80% more results than a cold call. We discussed that an important part of the networking process is developing a 30 seconds to one minute commercial of yourself. The commercial should contain your background information, current/prior roles in your responsibilities, education and knowledge, strengths and areas of interest and goals. Please post two parts to this blog. First, post your ideas for places that you can reach out to develop these network contacts (religious affliations, friends, prior work situations, etc.) Second part of the post should include your commerical script. Remember, our elevator assignments will require that you network and sell yourself in your 30 - 1 minute commercial. Use the lecture notes on networking during our impromptu speech lecture to help guide you in developing your self commercial.

Conquering Speech Anxiety
Communication Apprehension seemed to be a major focus in our presentations today. We reviewed in class earlier this semester that two important ingredients to effective speech delivery are reprogramming your "self talk" and putting in proper preparation so you really "know your stuff". Take a look at this clip. Then, post to the blog what your self talk sounds like and a portion of this interview that you identified with in your experience. What does your self talk sound like? What are three practical suggestions that you can give yourself to begin to conquer your speech anxiety?
Informative Passion Speeches
The speeches went well today for a first round. Think of feedback and critiques as a "gift". A chance to obtain information that will help you become stronger presentational speakers! Post your critiques here. Share three strengths and three improvements. Be sure to include details that clarify to the speaker exactly what was strong and how to make improvements. Keep going! You gain a better understanding about yourself and the process of communication with each speech!

Using Visual Ads to Create An Impact
We have discussed how to use powerpoint correctly to contribute to producing an effective message. What other types of visual aids could be used in a speech to creae an impact. Think outside the box and using the list of visuals that we dicussed in class (and are mentioned in the text, eg., models, charts, etc.). What creative ways could technology, and the internet sites be used? Or, what other types of visuals can you come up with has examples? Give two hypothetical speech situations and the type of visual aid that would be utilized in each speech. Remember, we are focusing on being clear and contagious when we speak! Blog comment due on Friday, Feb. 13th.

Creating An Impression
The goal of this assignment is to further deepen the knowledge acquired in class this semester in producing an effective speech presentation, please include the following criteria as a comment to this blog before our next class meeting on Friday, January 30th.Find a clip of a presenter (celebrity, athlete, politician, etc.) on Youtube or some other video outlet available to you on the Internet, and evaluate why you feel he or she makes an impact on you through his/her speech. You can use the feedback form you will be using to evaluate your peer's presentation next week as a reference for what to look for in this review. This presenter can be making a speech, giving an interview or in a film as a character who makes an impact on you. Try to find a presenter that has a communication/presentation skill that you are currently lacking and aspire to perfect. The clip should not be more than two minutes (it is just a small part of the whole presentation). Place the url address of the link in the blog for me and your peers to look at as they review your posting. Additionally, be prepared to share why you chose this person in our class meeting on Monday. Please do not choose a look clip as it might be time consuming to load in class. As stated, you can use Youtube, news site (CNN.com, msnbc.msn.com) live.com/video, TED Talks site or some other video sharing location on the web.
